ADDITIONAL INFORMATIONS:

- i specifically didn't mention padlocks for lockers kasi there is one locker in a room. i guess roommates will have to decide which clothes to hang. and you cannot lock it kasi masisira ang locker.

wlang masasampayan so basically, mgpapalaundry. (last year we (MA’AM JEN) got it for 25/kilo dun sa laundry service nila mam myrna. i don't know if they could go lower. there was another laundry shop na nag-offer ng 20/kilo pero they couldn't deliver on time)

HOW TO GET THERE?

FOR PRIVATE VEHICLES: Take exit to Batangas/Lucena and course through approximately 3 hours of travel. the objective is to get to Tayabas, Quezon, follow the main road. there are big directional signs that are easy to follow. you will pass through several towns namely: (in order) Sta. Tomas, Alaminos, San Pablo, Tiaong, Candelaria, Sariaya, then finally Tayabas. (you can actually skip lucena city and avoid traffic.) Reaching Tayabas town proper, you will be in graceland in less than 30 minutes.

FOR THOSE TAKING PUB (MY NOTE: I WISH YOU ALL THE BEST AND HAPPINESS IN LIFE DAHIL GOODLUCK SA PAG DADALA NG BAHAY NYO): find a suitable bus liner in buendia pasay. you can choose from Jam (infront of EGI Tower), Lucena Lines (along side Jam), Jac Liner (infront of Pasay Adventist Church). there are also available bus lines in cubao, and dela rosa alabang. from batangas city you can ride Supreme Transit. All of these go to one point, LUCENA GRAND CENTRAL TERMINAL. From the terminal, jeepney rides are available headed towards Lucban. I think aimone people will assist in giving directions in the terminal. then, ask the driver to get you to Graceland.

NO PARKING FEES FOR VEHICLES THAT WILL BE USED TO TAKE YOU THERE. PARENTS CAN VISIT YOU, WE WILL DISCUSS THE DATES.

RULES AND REGULATION TO FOLLOW. BUT ON OUR ARRIVAL WE WILL MEET THE GRACELAND AUTHORITIES BEFORE WE ACTUALLY CHECK-IN. TO TIGHTEN UP SECURITY AND STRAIGHTEN OUR RESPONSIBILITIES TO THE PROPERTY. YOU WILL BE ALLOWED TO GET OUT OF GRACELAND ON LONG WEEKENDS ONLY. AND PARENTS SHOULD GIVE CONSENT TO YOUR GOING OUT OF GRACELAND FOR WHATEVER REASON. I AM POSITIVE THAT NO HARM WILL BEFALL ANY OF US, KAYA SUPER EMERGENCY NA KAPAG LUMABAS KAYO OUT OF SKED. VISITING PARENTS CAN STAY OVERNIGHT IN OTHER QUARTERS NOT OCCUPIED BY STUDENTS. I DON'T KNOW THE RATES.

ONE PILLOW PER STUDENT WILL BE PROVIDED WITH PILLOW CASES. LINENS WILL BE CHANGED EVERY MONDAYS, WEDNESDAYS, AND FRIDAYS. LAUNDRY DAYS WILL BE ALTERNATE WITH LINEN CHANGE. YOU CAN BRING YOUR FAVORITE PILLOWS AND YOUR BEDDINGS. BATH TOWELS WILL NOT BE PROVIDED, SO PLEASE PREPARE TO CARRY 2 PCS. FOOT RAGS ARE OPTIONAL, PLEASE PLAN WITH YOUR ROOMMATES, BUT THEY WILL SWEEP OFF THE DIRT EVERYDAY, SO MAKE SURE YOUR THINGS ARE ALWAYS TIDY WHEN YOU LEAVE YOUR ROOMS.

GRACELAND WILL PROVIDE WATER IN WATER DISPENSERS (WITH HOT AND COLD SWITCHES) BUT PLEASE DO NOT ABUSE IT. TAKE AS MUCH AS YOU CAN CONSUME AND REFILL IF NECESSARY. DISPENSERS WILL BE ALLOTED PER HALL SO NO NEED TO WORRY.

FOR OUR BATCH SINGERS/INSTRUMENTALISTS/MUSICIANS: please bring pieces of your songs, just in case you will be asked to sing during worship.

Watch out for announcements concerning room arrangements, bus payments, worship schedule later. Pakispread nalang to sa iba ha. Thanks! :D

It's scary to think of, but the thing is, we may not all pass the board exam. We might not get 100%. But in the end, it's not going to be about whether we topped, or whether we passed, or whether we failed, it's about whether or not we did it for God's glory. So ICONS, let's all examine our hearts to check whether our motives are pure. But remember, just because you're doing something for God's glory and not your own doesn't mean you have to be less than perfect. In fact, when you're doing something for God, the more you'll strive for excellence, because HE deserves nothing less. Kaya aral aral na tayo, let's pray every night, let's pray every day, let's make HIM proud.

Last Duty Schedule as a Student Nurse

It is of mixed emotions that i post this last duty schedule. I can clearly recall the first time i posted updates regarding the clinical rotations schedules at our facebook page.. followed by some security issues, that's why i uploaded them here at this blogspot..

Very ironic that imma be posting the last schedule ever we'll have as a student nurse.. Gone are they days wherein we would crumble and fret our feet away when we learn our assigned areas..

This is it.. the final leg.. the last time for AM Students to wake up at 3-4AM in the morning; the last time PM students arrive past 1 AM; the last time each NOC student will see the sunrise at their clinical posts; and pretty much.. the last time will be on duty with our family here at CON..

Savor the last. Hold on the present and Move on into the future.

MARY MEDIATRIX SCRUBS (SPECIAL CASE)

On August 2010, the Level 3 Mary Mediatrix Clinical Instructors made a “data accumulation sytem” thru the VP Academics team. 3-weeks of grace period was given to those who would like to gather their missing data by downloading a certain form provided at www.icons2011.blogspot.com, filling it up with their needed data’s, and sending it over an email add provided.

Only 58 students submitted their requests. Sir Raul San Diego went to mary mediatrix just to find those data’s; he even had to sleep overnight the operating room. The data’s were given back 2 weeks after the submission, and was accordingly distributed by putting it up at the photocopy center.

Come second semester, there has been an INFLUX of data gathering request. We were expecting that since only 58 handed over their request, the REST WOULD HAVE COMPLETE DATA ALREADY; but then we were wrong. Counting on the scrubs that needed data, it would be around 100+. Now the Clinical Instructors opened the grace period and went to mary mediatrix for further data gathering alongside their clinical supervision with the Level 3 students.

Thing is, they found PROBLEMS in data gathering:

There are 2 logbooks they have to check on everytime: the GS (General Surgery) logbook, and the OB logbook.
Often times, the GS Logbook does not contain the whole information of the client (ex., no middle name)
The only LEGIT Data bank they could search on is the OR Computer, a device which contains ALL OPERATING ROOM DATA’S. Thing is, the OR SUPERVISOR does not allow clinical instructors to use the computer. Which explains the latest request still lacking of middle names et.al.

Sir Raul attested that, MMMCs protocol (as of last year) on gathering patient data has 2 steps:

Student Nurses should make a letter, addressed to the surgeon, in request to gather data.
If the Surgeon and Patient consents on it, then you will be brought to the medical records to pursue on data gathering.

Now Mary Mediatrix is ON HOLD since of these critical problems.

I'm hungry! I haven't had mom's home cooking in 3years since I've been stationed here in the S. Pacific. I am craving some Smoked turkey, gravy c mashed potatoes, rice, and some vegetables. Clean up with some hot pumpkin pie (or raspberry pie), freshly backed chocolate chip cookies and french vanilla icecream. Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Even if I'm not home, I am indeed thankful for a lot. 1) I'm alive- almost got hit by a bus and car these past fridays- ya, go figure. 2) Lucky to be taken by a smart, exquisitely gorgeous and intelligent girlfriend 3) that I'm part of batch iCONs and that we are almost done with our 2 steps.

Congratulations to all of us for we have maintained the tradition of maintaining a CON President.

I would like to clear up some misunderstandings that have formulated rumors which have been passed around:

1. I am NOT bitter nor discouraged about the Graduating Class Elections. I even voted for Lexan because I wanted CON to have the Presidency. My focus is for the Dedication and being President for the entire CON
- So Congratulations to Lexan and Chester for representing CON- iCONs

2. Mrs. Camba and I have talked and we are cool with each other. We've discussed how actions on both sides have led to mis-understandings- fueled by false FB comments, rumors, and mis-communications based on cultural differences. We are all moving forward together (Ci's and officers) and I hope that the batch can move forward with us also.

3.I will continue to do my job as President- To be your advocate and fast drip our dedication plans: to make it simple, elegant but yet memorable.

So my 2nd Semester Charge to all iCONs is for us to come closer together. To Stay UNITED as we finish our 2 steps: step 1) Graduate step 2) Review and take the boards. Let us make the last 4months memorable.

Hey iCONista!

Sir Falculan's handouts for his lecture on Acute Bio Crisis (for the first week) are now already posted below.

Since it's a LECTURE handout, and to protect the author's rights and claims (hardwork, sleepless nights, and thorough research just to make this powerpoints) i made several modifications on the file:

1. From PPT and DOC format, i converted it into PDF (so no intentional or unintentional modification can be made on the file; it'll come RAW and FRESH from the Author's stash)

2. I encrypted PASSWORD on each file; Files are exclusive for ICONS use only.

So what's the password?

Well, things doesn't always have to go EASY! :D (like the way i provide the duty schedule password thru the net, and all you guys need to do it to encode it and viola!). This time i put up a challenge; most specifically to those who already had their lecture under sir falculan.

To be able to access the file, one must encode the right answer corresponding to each designated question; these answers will serve as the password.

Here they are!:

Day 1 Ppts (File Name: Types of Hemodynamic Monitoring and Arterial Blood Gases):

Rationale behind the mind-boggling password:

"Well, besides protecting the rights and interests of the author, we would also like to be in the interest of the first 3 sections that had their lecture under Sir Falculan. Thus these questions is quite impossible to answer by those who haven't had their lecture under Mr. Falculan YET. (well, unless you go in depth research on the answers, or someone inside sections A-B-C tapped you with the answer)

Batch iCONS decides on their future:

An In-depth Look on the recent senior class officers elections

Silang Cavite, Philippines - a group of 203 Senior nursing students, commonly known as Batch iCONS 2011, Decided and made move to destine their future, as they casted their votes to slate certain people to govern them on July 2, 2010 at College of Nursing Review Rooms.

Straight from their hemorrhage inducing Communicable Disease and Immunity Unit Exam, these Individuals Commissioned and Opportuned to be Nurses for Service, sat down yet again to decide upon the Batch’s future.

The program commenced at around 9:30 AM, with an opening prayer from Ma’am Ruby Barrios, Level 4 Clinical Instructor. Ma’am Nanette Camba, Level 4 Department Head, facilitated the elections. This year, the GPA cut-off to all the offices was cut-down from 3.7 (for major offices

) and 3.5 (for minor offices) to a justified range of 3.0; giving chance to most individuals to lead and humbly serve the batch.

“This feels very awkward, and im a little bit anxious with the outcome,” a batchmate verbalizes as Ma’am Lea Divina and Ma’am Marj Sibayan wr

ote down the possible nominees for each position. After the list was rolled down, the nominations commenced.

Many names were nominated, but only few were called to serve. Here’s the official list of officers with their corresponding votes percentage:

This years election, compared to the past elections, is a whole lot more serious; maybe because their has been some “campaigning” days prior to the elections. Now the votes has been casted, and

those names were slated on their respective positions, we’ll just have to see how truly “serious” they would be with their Jobs.

Change has been called, and has appeared upon eventually. The officers, under the Leadership of Mr. Villareal, hope and pray that this would mark the the start of a broader, better, and bigger change for the batch - all directed for the best.

Self Analysis Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) from batchmates:

1. When is the exact due date?

- June 8, enrollment date.

2. What is the spacing? can we use 2 spaces, or at least 1.5 on each line?

- Single Space Only

3. What's the font size? Can we use other fonts?

- Font Size should be 12 and Font should be Times New Roman only

4. On the family tree, would it be diagram? or narrative

- Both Diagram and Narrative, (i think like in our case conference papers)

5. Do we need to put pictures?

- its not a need, but if you are to put pictures, have them printed with the paper not hard copy. Also, please take note that page counting would not include pages with pictures alone.

6. References. How Many?

- 7 would be minimum number. References should be from BOOKS.

7. Can we change the heading title? like instead of using "Introduction" have it "Prologue" or "Foreword"

- Please stick with the original heading.

Here's an issue that already was "taken cared of" but i guess the graduated party wants to "make more fuss". There was this guy who wanted to take a hit on the writer. HAHAHHAHAHAHAH. Come on... Please... And certain individuals making comments who shouldn't make comments because it betrays their "respective" eye on the situation and well, just the vicious cycle of who has the bigger stick and what not. I will say this: as "bigcatblogger" has stated- there has been steps taken to do away with this "situation" which was intended for ONLY ICONS to read about. NOt even trying to stir up any trouble. Try not to get your stick broken please. Just finish whatever you need to finish. And let us do what we need to do.

HOw am i supposed to write 34 pages about me? that's just downright vain and into ones self. hahaha. ohhh CON. at least its business. Not make some scrapbook with pretty colors. Like i said in other lengthy reports we had to turn in, what's wrong with turning in something black and white and in some plastic sheet. word

the silence in my room was deafening..

i could even here my small wrist watch crack its hands out...

"Haay.." i lazily uttered as i scrolled by internet browser up and down.

Then i thought of re-browsing my hard drive.. to put some new pics on it; All of a sudden, I came across several pictures during our Level 3 Activities.

"Haha! Fundamentals of Nursing 2009.. such a memorable one!," i said to myself, producing a small twitch on my cheeks producing a small weary smile. Back then all things were NEW. i mean LITERALLY. Like who didn't have difficulty on making the effin DAR right? Like i literally failed the exam on it. And who wouldv'e thought that the dreaded Medicine Checklist was that EASY to learn on our clinical duties, than having Ma'am Tantia talk us to sleep? Right. And, *drum roll* the most sought after FUNDAMENTALS OF NURSING FILM FEST what''up!? Some DID NOT enjoy making it, but most DID. It was when we discovered "several" talents within the batch. Cause you know what they say, "Nursing is an ART - and i mean SHOWBIZ" haha!

*click click click*, i arrived at some of the Capping, Pinning and Candle-lighting Ceremony frames. Maybe most of our batchmates doesn't even get the essence of the ceremony; all they know is just to stand at PIC for 2 hours or so, and get that ceremony over with. But for us, its more than that: sleepless nights, constant meetings, hunger-strikes, oh life blows during those times. But one things for sure, "It trained me not only as a person, but also as a radical character." It was also during that time when our ability to stand on our own was tested.. H1N1 incident remember? it was Sir Vargas block that was quarantined for like 4 days or so..which includes the team leader, Lexan. We felt so helpless, as the days before the ceremony was nearing. But boy i was wrong, i only thought of a human leader, forgeting about our all time Leader, Christ. Thanks to His goodness, the ceremony pulled through with minimal problems.

As the doors of PIC closed, marks the start of REAL Clinical duty. i was SOO ANXIOUS that time. I barely can even sleep thinking of what will happen in the floor; will i kill a patient? Hope not.

We were SO MUCH BULLIED back then, cause we had MCN blocking before MSN; them MS pipz (yeah, OUTSPOKEN am i) confidently lurks around the halls of CON, full of tense, thrust, and knowledge of the real Medical Surgical Stuff, while us, feeling left out, and, yeah, "Bobo", stuck our dirty noses under Community Blockings, and the never ending Vaginal Lessons.

My first blocking was a 1-week length of Pedia duty with Ma'am Zis Zuniga. Boy, i looked so much stupid, interviewing the patient with GORDON'S ASSESSMENT on hand (aka, sophomore style), and panickly taking 3 patients vital signs, and yeah, they were BABIES so i was having a hard time getting the RR. i HATED the hospital back then. AM Care? shessh! i barely can even remember how to bath a baby! "I NEED my Video of Ma'am Cabana's babies bath lecture!" i frantically grabbed my phone, later on learning that my Memory card was formatted. and the rest was history. Good thing i didn't kill the baby by drowning or cooking him on boiling water or something. I really look up to Ma'am Zis since then, she's very very supportive. I remember saying the phrase "This is really what's up.." during one of our lunch breaks at GEAMH.

then came lecture week with Ma'am "Sleep-Inducing" Tantia. Oh GOD, how i wish i knew what she was talking about back then, CORION? HCG? Like WTH was that. For the whole 2 week period, i went and finished classes without anything on stock. It was a REAL MIRACLE that i passed through that concept.

It was now Ma'am Estapon's turn on lecture. Actually I was excited, cause i really find her teaching FUN and challenging, though most of the time, like 30% of the lecture goes to her funny stories, which is a good thing, considering that, students tend to DIE to SLEEP after 2-3 hours of continuos lecture pep talk. It was during her Lecture when i FULLY, (with fervent expression verbalized) the whole NURSING CARE PLAN thing. and it was really quite cool! I remember most of her quizzes would be:

"Number 1, write a nursing diagnosis of a problem of the inlet, then in Number 2 and 3, write your interventions with rationale." I LOVED those quizzes, cause it internalizes everything, and tests on how you understood the concept and stuff. I remember her words, which really turned into an internal concept later on, "You can make your own nursing diagnosis, even though its not in the NANDA book. All you have to know is the ongoing pathophysiology and the main nursing problem."and to that, I salute Ma'am Naty for an efficient mentor during our MCN days; the old connotation of FEAR when you meet Mrs. Estapon - now LONG GONE.

"We need an activity," Team Leader verbalized during one of the teams meeting. We have had lots of warnings from several CIs that, basing on the batch's performance; some of our batchmates wouldn't make it to second semester. We were soo much ALARMED then. I even remember Mrs. Orbe's words "You should bond the batch as early as possible, cause not all will see each other when second semester comes." Thus we were challenged to MOVE, putting up the separate sabbath, under the theme "iCONNect", directed on strengthening the feeble CONnection we had back then.

"Why do we have to GO to that event! Its like on a weekend, and why should it be REQUIRED?" one of the most hardest question a batchmate or two would throw to us while we were collection the Sabbath Lunch Fee. It was always like a slap on the face, having to be questioned like that, after all these activities were done for each batchmates benefit and upliftment.. we went on collecting money, though the shame due to anger by some batchmates. "It will always be like that, you just have to sensitize yourselves." and adviser wisely told us during our down moments.

The event struck excitement to the batch; the activities were captivating enough, and ma'am Jorbe's teaser phrase "You'll have more during the retreat" had the people wanting for more. Thus first semester ended.

From a pinned and capped number of 238 nursing students, we were left down to 212. ouch. It was hurtful to see batchmates go, some had their own reasons: financial, social, mental, spiritual, and only few of which were due to grades.

The Buzz echoed, leading us to second semester. MSN time! Time for those MC pipz to experience what it really feels like to be PEED at. (by a baby of course, haha!) Wait.. i heard doc dee LEAVING. *thinks of it a little longer*, WHAT!? DR. DEE = LEAVING? The thought left me sleepless for a night (yeah seriously).

So I was on the jeep coming back from SM Santa Rosa today. Out of the corner of my eye, i see this dirty kid crawl onto the jeep with his hands and knees and uses a potholder cloth to clean the floor of the jeep. He gets to the front of the jeep and still with his head down and not making any eye contact, he holds up his hand for pay. Ouch! sakit yun to even look at! Of course i dropped some money into the kids hands and he gets out of the jeep while moving. Sadness...

N303: EPIC or EPEK?

6 weeks has passed, and so we come to the end of our N303 Summer duty. Senior years just steps away! Anyway, how did your summer duty go? mine was umm.. pretty much... EPIC. Besides being blocked at GEAMH-DR (Thank You Lord for the cases), i ended the summer duty with a BANG at OSMUN-ER... ER of all ERs!

So last monday i blogged about my first ER duty.. and i thought it was EPIC enough.

2nd (or 3rd day due to the holiday) Came:

--- the team entered the area with the SURGICAL/OB/CCU/MINI OR/PEDIA on full house. A blockmate and i (yeah, only 2 of us, cause were only 5 during the whole ER duty) were assigned to cover these wards. so goes the story.

--- at around 10 pm, we then prepared meds for these current ward residents: skin test done, IV push done. Then came these two newly admitted patients, gave them ATS and TT vaccines, and they waited for their turn in the mini OR.

--- at 11:30 pm, came this big old man, per stretcher. he looked cold and stuff, and we were guessing the case might be D.O.A. Patient was intubated, and yours truly was able to assist in inserting. ER Nurse got VS = no pulse. IV insertion done by Sir Viel! shoot it only took seconds.. wise experienced ER nurses FTW! Yours truly pushed EPI on the patient, and had helped in the chest compressions, after 20-30 minutes, patient was announced dead. so post mortem (THE REAL ONE) was done by the team.

--- 3 ward patients were all having GCS 3, so we were to closely monitor them for the remaining hours.

--- at 2:00 am, ward 4 had cardio/respi arrest. it wasn't a surprise since he was one of the patients having GCS 3. family members going frantic and wild at the ward, patient was on DNR, so no chest compressions and pushing of EPI/DOBU-DOPA/or any emergency drugs was made. 2nd post mortem care for the shift done by team.

--- at 4:00 am, right after the groups break at ministop, their came this guy, cranium smashed into two, but no open wound, only severe concussion d/t vehicular accident. ET Insertion was done by the MD, yours truly suctioned the patient's mouth ozzing with blood (got myself messed up with blood T_T). Patient was in decorticate position, Mannitol 200ml was given d/t increased intracranial pressure. He had open fracture on his distal 3rd of tibia, L leg, and a fracture at his R arm. Catheter, NGT insertion done by the team.

If you guys could only imagine the anxiety and frustrations inside the ER of OSMUN, compared to other Emergency Rooms. As a student nurse, me, myjeily, riset, besa, and berna, were all so lucky to finally have it ALL HANDS ON - talking bout real nursing care here.

A brief comparison between other affiliating agency's ER vs. OSMUN's-ER

1. Other Agencies:

> Your only allowed to do V/S, the rest observe (as what other batchmates says)

> You can do ECG, but thats it. staff nurses do it all.

> staff nurses = unfriendly

> For stabbed wounds, patient goes directly to OR.

2. OSMUN ER

> Your allowed to do.. umm.. pretty much EVERYTHING: V/S, Skin tests, Suctioning, CBG, NGT insertion, IV insertion, Catheter Insertion, ET Tube insertion (assist), Through Vain Meds administration, Post Mortem (from ER till at the morgue), IV Meds calibration and incorporating, ambubagging et.al.. in short... REAL nursing stuff.

> You DO the ECG, and staff nurses and doctors help you interpret the ECG STRIPS.

> staff nurses = totally friendly and helpful! They give all the real thing work to us students, giving us the chance to at least learn them skills.

> Suturing still depends on the IM on duty, like come'on.. theres only 1 doctor for all CCU/SURGICAL/TRIAGE/MINI OR Patients.. like one time, there was this man having stabbed wounds.. he was admitted at 2 AM, and had to wait till 6AM to get his stabbed wound done.. the irony of public hospitals.

> in OSMUN, you get to meet ALL KINDS OF CLIENTS: RUDE clients, DRUNK clients, BITCH clients, INDIGENT clients, and all. That's why most of the time 3 or 4 police officers invade the triage area.

Special Notes:

1. It was an honor to be recognized by Sir Falculan, telling me "You ought to be an ER nurse."

2. Thanks to this blocking, am now considering to have the ER Area as one of my choice field next to OR if i get bummed to pursue medicine.

The gist: Whenever you will be blocked at OSMUN-ER this coming first semester, DO EVERYTHING YOU CAN. Its only a once or twice in a lifetime experience to feel the REAL DEAL. Grab all the skills you can have! Its like GEAMH-DR in an Emergency Room comparison with other agencies.

Last time i had my first every NOC duty as OSMUN ER, heres what happened:

at 10PM we entered the vicinity LATE, heavy traffic jammed our way at paseo de. sta rosa, leaving us with no choice but to wait for the slow roll to move for an hour or so. The area was full of commotion, ER nurses running here and there, IV insertions done at max speed, ambu-bagging at a cubicle, crying stabbed patients at the triage - the whole set up was so much different from the scene we usually see. Reminds me of Sir Falculan's words, "Say Mary Med ER, CMC-ER, or MAMC-ER? Consider OSMUN-ER a different one, different cases will come in.. most of which involved crime scenes, and the drama? jeez. you don't wanna get involved. Most of the time it'll look like a prison place with lots of police invading the place."

I was assigned at the Triage area - the place where you segregate and prioritize patients. oh HELL it was so HOT there.. oops.. re-thinking.. i sweat a lot! specially in hot under-ventilated areas.. so yeah.. i kept my cool, been so wet for the whole shift like i just did jump into a pool. I felt dehydrated while interviewing, but that didn't stop me from admitting at least (estimated)10-15 patients for the whole shift.. it was an easy job though, data gathering, and of course with the help of Besa, my co-sweat partner, its all good in a breeze.

1st admission came in.. a 19/M patient, traumatized at the (L) posterior aspect of her cranium by a chair.. after asking what happened, he irritatingly answered "I was involved in GANG fight, and was smashed with a school chair." "wow he went ghetto on this one," i contemplated silently while weighing the patient. To summarize, maybe around 5-6 of all the patients i admitted were involved in either b*tch fight, ghetto war, et al, and others? N&V, Chest Pains, and excitingly LABOR PAINS (yeah, some of the team were so much looking for DR SCRUBS.). One patient though was stabbed at the LLQ of his abdomen by an unknown person at around 2AM. Its pretty cool though, cause 2 of my blockmates finished their MINOR OR scrubs because of the flooding cases of suturing at the mini-OR.

One patient took all our curious minds' attention. GCS 4, under cardiac monitor w/ defibrillator on deck, and continuous ambubagging by relatives and neighbors. We approached the patient; V/S Done, Nuero Vi Done. BP = 220/170, PR=105, Temp = 38.1..... WOW.. the compensatory mechanism of our body does really do wonders. The patient had stroke, as what the relatives told us.. and theyre just waiting for his time to meet our Father above. I asked the lady doing the respi stuff, "Ate, Kaano-ano mo sya? (Ate, how are you related with the patient?) " She replied in frustration, "Ahh, wala, kapit bahay lang ako (am just his neighbor). WT*? Follow up questions were thrown, "Asan ung mga kasama nya? asawa nya? mga anak? (where are his relatives? his wife, children?)", she then replied, "Andun sa labas yung asawa, nag papahangin, tapos ung anak nasa bahay, COMA na kasi to, inaantay nalang ung oras nya, eh ayaw pumayag nung asawa na itigil lahat ng nag papabuhay sa kanya. (Shes there outside, breathing some fresh air. He's already on COMA, and just waiting for his time. Thing is, his wife doesn't wan't to sign the DNR form."

Then i asked what's the reason behind the refusal ,she then replied, "Yung panganay ata nilang anak ung mag sisign dapat kasi hindi nya kaya.." i then asked where the Kuya is, she said, "ANDON, nag BABASKETBALL."

Pretty COOL? Playing basketball while his dad's life is on the brink of being expired?..

At the end of the shift, the wife then signed the DNR form. She held the patient's hand, crying at the bedside, while doing the ambu-bag.

We may now know what's the Kuya's perspective on this... why he kept on playing BASKETBALL after all.. Maybe its his way to divert and Deny the facts..

So I've heard that there is this "feared" MD surgeon at CMC OR that clowns and degrades student's blocked under him unless you are a girl and a foreigner. Anywho, I'm blocked under this hommie.

Rewind: For some reason I was anxious about OR. It has been over a sem since I did anything OR related. But this text helped me out greatly: Isaiah 26:3 = "You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in you."

And glory to God, i nailed that out of the park. Was able to keep up with giving instruments, cutting the sutures, set up the sterile instruments, and the "feared" MD didn't yell at me or anyone else for that matter.

So this "feared" MD. He has nothing and is Nothing compared to my God who give me strength, peace of mind, and confidence to stand up against those who are "feared".

Often, in church, i envy the people who stand in front and share a testimony. Sometimes it's about their experiences during an outreach, or how their parents disowned them when they decided to get baptized, or how somebody close to them died and it changed them. Don't get me wrong, i do not envy them because they get to stand in front (goodness, NO, i would probably faint from nervousness), i envy them because they have a powerful story to tell of how God intervened in their lives. Yesterday, i learned my lesson, the hard way. I learned that envying is a sin and i should be careful what i wish for, because i just might get it.

"Pag-madumi ang sapatos nyo, absent-an ko kayo!" Those were ma'am Estapon's words that sent me searching for white shoe polish. I even had a tiff with my mom over the frustration of finding something that would restore my shoes to it's original color. When i finally found it (Thank you, Mr. Alvin Amurao), i stayed up late just to make sure that every centimeter of each shoe was as white as paper. After around 30 minutes of washing, polishing, and brushing, my pair looked like duty-shoes again! I placed it on the floor, admiring my masterpiece(haha!), and thought to myself "Ha! Tingnan natin kung sino ang absent!"

FASTFORWARD TO THE NEXT DAY, (Friday) April 30, 2010.

5:00 AM I hop on the bus and scan the seats for ate Deem, my seatmate for the past two days. Oh, there she is, but she's seating on the other side of the bus, weird. Fine, doesn't matter, i guess. And kuya Martin Adea's here too! Probably coming to get some scrub forms signed. I proudly show ate deem my shoes, they're sooo white, i love it!

5:20-ish Finally a batchmate who probably woke up late is here now. Good thing she was able to catch up. We pray and off we go! Kuya Martin and I are chatting, lights are still on. Im probably not gonna get much sleep now.

5:45 Ma'am Estapon scolds the kuya-driver for loading gas only now, when we're already late for duty. She tells the driver to next time load up on gas at night. Kuya-driver shyly says yes ma'am, and we are on the road again. Kuya martin's stopped talking now, probably sleeping, and I try to get some too. For some reason, even if i try, sleep won't come. I guess i'll just have to settle with closing my eyes. Come sleep, my patient's baby poops like there is no tomorrow, and i want to be alert for that.

6:30-ish The driver hits the breaks three times. Why? Oh no, something's wrong. I open my eyes and HOLY KAMOTE we are going to...... *CRRRAAAAAASSSSSHHHHH* I open my eyes(i don't remember but i guess i closed my eyes again before the impact). The windshield is smashed into pieces and i cannot see the driver and the kuya-conductor. Wala na ung front ng bus, sobrang yupi. Ma'am Lea is stuck in her chair and cries for help. Whoah, did sir Shal just lift the whole seat and set ma'am Lea free?! Amazing! I turn to my right and ate Deem's face is so red, but she seems fine. I turn to my left and Micah is bleeding! Blood all over her uniform. Look for something to wipe the blood and put pressure on wherever the bleeding's coming from. Kuya Martin helps me look. Oh wait, nose bleed pala. Atleast yun lang. My other batchmates are shaken, but nobody was unconscious. Good sign. I look down, and DARN IT! My shoes!
My just-this-morning-so-pretty-white shoes, are DIRTY AGAIN. Hay, Thank You Lord everybody seems to be fine. Wait, the people outside are screaming for us to get out. Hala! There's smoke coming out from the front of the bus! Dear God, please naman don't let the bus explode. Atleast not until everybody is safe outside. Oh my, wala ng door! How do we get outside? Teka, sir Shal is jumping out the window! Ako din! Im bringing my bag and my dear red pillow. Kaso baka mahirapan ako. Ok leave it. Ay wag! Andito skills booklet ko. I run to the window. Ate Deem, kuya Martin, let's go na DALI! Kuya Martin: "WAIT! asan ang scrub forms ko?! ANG SCRUB FORMS KOOOOOO!" Bahala ka jan, ako im jumping na. Waaaah! Ang taas pala! KEBS! May i throw my things on the road and JUUUUMMMP! okay im safe now. I think. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, THANK YOU Lord!

After everyone was able to get out of the bus, police patrols and ambulances came to bring us to the Ospital ng Muntinlupa E.R., another highway hospital, and a police station. At the station a police told us that we were so lucky because most of the accidents they experienced, they ended up picking bodies on the road. Dr. Flores' family, Mr. Morada, and Kuya Jonathan Gonzales came to the station, provided us with some food and took us to a bus station. Rides from AUP would take too long now since the traffic going our way wasn't moving anymore, so we had to commute to OsMun. At OsMun, another bus was waiting for us. There we were reunited with the other people who had more injuries than we did. They were stitched and patched up now. Micah, my nosebleeder friend was smiling again! At AUP, we all went down at the clinic just so they can make sure that everybody was okay.

I praise God because He is too good. I escaped with just bruises on my knees & legs, muscle pain, and dirty shoes. The worst injury we had was nothing seven sutures couldn't fix. Looking at the pictures of the bus now, i would think that people inside wouldn't be spared. But God didn't allow that to happen, He kept everyone safe from serious injuries. And at the end of the day, we were all back from the hospital, clinic, and police station, ready to welcome the Sabbath and praise God for giving us another chance at everything.

Thank you to all who called, texted, commented & messaged here in FB, and visited me at home. Most especially thank you for your prayers. AUP-iCONS BUS HITS CHEMICAL TANK: CAUSES MAJOR TRAFFIC AT SLEX

Manila, Philippines - a group of 21 Nursing Students, namely batch iCONS, together with their clinical area supervisors, was caught in an accident at around 6:10 AM (Manila Standard Time) at Southern Luzon Express Way on April 30, 2010.

The 10-wheeler truck was doing a sudden U-turn when, the speeding school bus of Adventist University of the Philippines collided onto it; leaving the Chemical tank on Lateral Position, and the Beloved AUP Bus with Plate Number RAS 766 on total front-part wreck.

ed in the accident reported that, most of the passengers were hurt, and had minor injuries. Ms. Lee Ye Eun (Grace) fainted, and had deep cuts; Ms. Verina Willis had her lip injured; Ms. Lulit Gedamu has chin injury; Ms. Riset Toyogon jumped out of the window, and had injured the anterior aspect of her left leg with shattered window glasses (seen at the video below), and Mrs. Natividad Estapon, Clinical Instructor, had head contusion after the blow.

The passengers were divided into two groups: one group was brought at Ospital ng Muntinlupa, and the others were brought at the AUP Clinic. They were all screened for major and minor injuries at each respective areas emergency room, and all had their chest x-ray's.

"We were really in shock during that moment, i had like 30 seconds to take a bath, then rushed to OSMUN (Ospital ng Muntinlupa) and arrived there in just 15 minutes," Dean Susy Jael tells us. "We were just so glad that no one was badly injured," Ms. Tayamora adds.

As of now, the victims are now all safe and no fatalities were reported.

I get waken up at 0630hrs. I'm hearing that there is an accident with the MAMC Bus. I'm awake! Getting details here and there. a lot of my buddies are on that bus. Ever notice that when one of our own get into an accident, doesn't matter who they are, where they're from, or if we like them or not.. all that gets pushed aside and we want to help. Ex: Fire fighters, cops, military personal- when anyone gets a "man down" = everyone in their outfit and nearby outfits drop and come out to help. For us nurses... when our own gets a "man down", we drop anything and do anything to help. Thank God there were no fatalities on that bus...

Patient Confidentiality: still being practiced today? Yeah right.

So a famous person from who knows where was admitted at the agency were we had duty for week 5 of N303.

It was a day full of commotion. the agency was all on red alert, like there was a bomb threat or something.

media was one standby outside the agency, everyone was anxious to go at the main entrance and preferred to leave

the place via ER backdoor.

After the "buzz", the confidentiality of the patient was put on the deck..

everyone was talking about what happened, like it wasn't "JUST" another patient. General cleaning today brought some staff from other departments talking to the staff in our area. What were they talking about? personal stuff about the patient, (most of which i cannot mention here). They were even viewing the CT-Scan of the patient; like it was a movie or something.. They even had to broadcast to their co-workers the patient's T.O.D. and stuff...

So the question goes: "Does our contemporary health providers REALLY practice patient confidentiality?"; "Would they talk about other low-profile patients too?"; or, "are they even aware of what they're doing?""

I clearly recall a lesson from our health ethics class, "Information cannot be and should not be revealed unless the person your releasing the info to is DIRECTLY related with the care."

so was everybody related to the care? that i cannot answer. still the questionable etiquete lives on. we'll i cannot blame the staff their, since it is really human's nature to "talk about what's up."

Iron man 2 is going to be legend- wait for it... dary! legendary! i see a lot of posts via FB that you all are getting groups together and going to see it. If i may make a suggestion: don't settle for Sm Santa Rosa or Robinsons to see this awesome movie, go big! I'm not talking about Festi either (no offense). I'm talking MOA, Trinoma, Glorieta, and wait for it- Green Belt. Sure, the ticket price might be a little bit pricey. For example: If you can score a movie ticket at Sm STa Rosa for p120 for the balcony seats, your going to pay like p160 at the other major malls. And since you eager go lucky individuals want to see it opening day/night/ weekend- plan on spending p170- 180/head. Not to mention you going to pay for your popcorn, treats, snacks, and if your hoping to score a date with a significant other, then you'll be spending double. and least we say fare?!! To be safe, bring p650 for a round trip, movie, and snacks at the theater. heres the breakdown:

The Proposal

There was a man who loved this lady very much. And like any other man would do, he started courting her. He tried everything and anything possible just to win her heart and prove his love for her. He gave her flowers almost every single day, he was ever patient even when waiting for almost 2 hours for her to finally get dressed, he called her once in a while to see if she’s fine, he became good friends with her friends and family, he prayed for her day and night, he was calm and percipient when she gets so angry, he was kind and understanding when she does something wrong, he was honest all the time, he was never rude nor conceited, a sensitive man he is. Respect and integrity is his principle. He is indeed a man to be admired by all women.

But this lady is utterly blind and stubborn. And despite of it all and everything he had done for her, to this completely diehard woman, it was still not enough. She just can’t be pleased, she was insatiable. She was proud, rude, conceited and disrespectful. Almost everyone hated her and finds her appalling. People would go to this man and ask him why he made such a terrible and disagreeable choice of woman to marry. People urged him to leave the disgraceful woman and find a more agreeable lady to pursue.

But he’s a determined man. His decision is resolute and unwavering. And His love for her is impregnable. So though everyone in town tried to urge him to leave her, he was not persuaded. Instead he would tell them,

“I still want her”

Though all of his ways of showing his love for her failed, there is however one bold act left for him to do in which he hopes that this final time, he will be able to convince and prove to her how much he truly loves her.

Early morning, he took out a very astonishing ring. It was made of fine solid silver crowned with 24-carat sparkling diamond. This ring is not like any of the ordinary diamond rings. This one is different from the other kinds due to its exceptional color, cut, uniqueness and clarity. Moreover, this ring is a family asset which was passed down by his own father to him. It is very valuable to him because it is in fact the engagement ring of his mother. He took it out and marveled by its dazzling beauty.

He never wanted to let this go for he treasured this so greatly but he knows that time will come that he will have to give this up for a woman he came to love.

That very night he met the lady. The woman was surprised when he went down on his knees and showed her the astonishing ring. Then the man said, “Can you see now my great love for you. Will you marry me?” then it was the woman’s turn to reply, it is either yes accept the ring and marry him or no refuse the ring and not marry him. And there was a great pause…

There is a living God Who loves us very much. And like the man, He’s also been trying all possible ways just to show and prove how much He loves us. He proved it before the beginning of time and will continue to prove it even after the end of time.

For love is His true essence and His core being

He tried courting us by setting us free from the bondage of slavery from Eqyptians, He even wrote the commandments by His own hand for us, He protected us from the wilderness, He provided us manna from heaven when there was no food to eat and when there was no water to drink he provided us water from the smitten rock. Every enemy we encounter ours was the victory, He lived with us through the sanctuary without us being consumed by His great glory, He made us witness miracles: fire coming from heaven, division of the red sea, when no one was there for you He was there for you.

He always has your back.

In Him all life succeeds and exists. He is the Well-spring of all life. Crowned with all glory and honor and the centerpiece of all universe. Nothing can supersede Him.

God marveled by His dazzling holiness.

A ring, it is round and has no ends. It is unending. An engagement ring, it symbolizes unending love…everlasting love. Who is this ring? Who is this God's engagement ring for us? Truly no other than Christ.

Jesus is God’s engagement ring. He is the perfect reflection of God’s everlasting love for us.

He never wanted to let His Son go for He treasured Him and loved Him so greatly but He knows that time will come that He will have to give Jesus up for the sake of us whom He love.

That one bold final act for Him to do was when Jesus was nailed on the cross. He poured all the treasures of Heaven in One Gift- Jesus Christ. God was actually down on His holy knees when Christ was hanging on the cross and sweating with blood with such irrepressible agony. The Almighty was down on His knees before us and showing to us His beloved ring- Jesus. And tells us,

“Can you see now my great love for you. Now will you please marry me?”

Then it is our turn to reply. It’s either we accept the ring and be the bride. Meaning we accept Jesus, be God’s bride and marry Him someday when He comes back. Or, we don’t accept the ring meaning to reject Jesus and not be with God ever in heaven.

And there was a great pause…the bride is thinking of an answer

Will you accept the ring or not?

Will you marry Him and be God's bride?

It is yours to decide.

This is God’s proposal to you.

Tubes...

It was day one for us at Mary Mediatrix Medical Center. as most of us know, we always have our so called "orientation" before going on real duty. Me and the crew were assigned on Intensive Care Unit - by the name itself, calls for "Toxic Duty."

Bummed Bag checking.. DONE

Logging In... DONE

then we took off to the "Agency."

After an hour of "blah blahs" and "nah nahs" the group separated into their respective area assignments.

anxious as we are, we marched on the the locker rooms, got dressed into our white scrubsuits,

and went to ICU..

The area was filled with deafening silence.. like when you enter a room with sound proof walls.

Everything was so quite, like any sudden obnoxious noise you'll make could cause a patient's death or something.

There we were oriented into some basic routines within the area; the machineries, the meds, and all..

During orientation, i couldn't help myself but to feel anxious. Looking around the ward, it was full of patient with

different types of tubes lodged into them.. ET Tubes, Suction Tubes, IJ, 4-5 IVF's with infusion pumps, cardiac monitoring, Bp Cuff, Catheters, Mechanical Ventilators, O2 et.al.. its like seeing an electric post with different wires, only this time - a real live person.

Seeing the scenario was too MUCH for my bare benign eyes (for the past 2 weeks, my duties have been so benign!).

Then the worst came, a patient in cubicle #3 "Arrested", so everyone in the area grumbled their assess towards the cubicle to revive the patient. Twas weird tough, cause they had to revive the patient SILENTLY, unlike in MAMC or MCMC wherein everyone shouts for some assistance.

While the CI was explaining stuff, i wasn't even listening... i was focusing on the CPR Drama inside the cubicle.. 30 minutes passed, the doctor stopped the maneuver.. then everything was back to normal again.. leaving the dead patient inside the cubicle..

Orientation day was TOXIC enough... how about tommorow's first ever duty?

Well, that's for me to find out.. imma see how those Tubes efficiently work to save lives...

"emerica sucks!"

So im at duty and theres this pt that has a shirt that says "emerica sucks!". i was pissed. now, i know im in the PHilippines and I will do my best to learn better the Filipino culture and their way of living. But you don't see me wearing a shirt that says Philippines is corrupted or whatever. right? I hate how people hate AMERICA. but again, that's your opinion and yes, AMERICA isn't the perfect place and she has her faults. BUt even though, just like you are proud to be Filipino. I'm damn proud to be AMERICAN. but seriously, sporting a shirt that says "ermerica sucks!" come on...

Suicide

Was blocked at the ER this past week when a suicide patient came in. Strangulation and deep rope burns/cuts on the neck. We did all we could with CPR and live saving practices to bring the patient back. However- it was to late. As I was doing CPR, we observed the family rushing in angry, weeping, and hysterical. There are many reasons why one would "off' him/herself. There are also many reasons why one shouldn't take their own life. However where is the line for suicide? is it selfish? Is it a greater good to save a life and lose your own?

As the MD called T.O.D. and the family was crying and hysterical, it made me wonder- is suicide really worth it?

SUMMER DUTY CLEARANCE

1. Summer Duty Clearance will be released on APRIL 30, 2010 at Level 3 office and at the Dean's Office. So please make sure to drop by and get one on friday

2. You can start your clearances GRADUALLY as early as next week.

3. OFFICIAL CLEARANCE WEEK IS ON MAY 11-14, 2010 ONLY. The CIs would be leaving by May 16, so have them accomplished accordingly.

The clearance would have:

--- 6 SLOTS for your past Summery Duty Clinical Instructors,

(TIP: You can bring them during your duty, so that during every end of the duty week, you can have them sign on it.)

--- SLOTS for OR and DR Scrub Checking (Accomplish them as early as POSSIBLE)

(NOTE: Official Announcements regarding the FINAL FORMAT of the scrub forms would be announced by Dean Jael by June. Meanwhile, to be safe, have ALL YOUR DATAS COMPLETE, and for NEWLY ACCUMULATED SCRUBS (Starting This Week) leave the slot for CIs who supervised BLANK, not unless you had Ma'am Estapon and Ma'am Tejada as your CI's. Why? Ma'am Jael confirms as of April 22, 2010, that PRC might only accredit signatures from Follow-up CI's who have Masters Degree. Still has to confirm with Ma'am Tejada though for the OR, but that's what Ma'am Jael told me when i went to her office this afternoon. Ask our CIs to be sure.)

What comes around goes around! You believe in that saying yes? Or in short "Karma". So yesterday's blog was talking about not team players and how they'll get burned yes? Well today was Med reporting. One of the members that didn't help out with the dividing of meds (the person just didn't want to help out for ______ reason), was assigned to go FIRST for the med reporting! WHAT NOw! You don't help out a team, you get burned by the team.

Today's blog:

Shut the F! Up in the morning! Seriously. Overly-hyper students who are squealing with phenomenal happiness or making jokes and are obnoxiously loud at 5AM!!!!!! - should be assigned post mortem care for the rest of the summer. Seriously. Shut up!!

OR Scrubs Reminder; scrub it, scrub it, scrub it!

A Message Ma'am Janice Rebot last night thru the Advisory Net:

"Reminding ALL ICONS to please accomplish your Operating Room Scrub Form/s

before the summer duty ends. NO SCRUB FORMS = NO CLEARANCE. Thank You!"

So we better suit up and do these scrub forms during our free time. At least were less toxic this summer duty, right?

Just a Few Reminders:

1. There should be four (4) Scrub Forms to be presented during the clearance signing; the first three, the patient's name should only BE IN INTIALS (ex. Kevynne R. Mergal = K.R.M.); then the fourth one should have the patients COMPLETE name (Ex. Kevynne Rosales Mergal)

2. The Agency should be in ALL CAPS (Ex. GENERAL EMILIO AGUINALDO MEMORIAL HOSPITAL, TRECE MARTIRES CITY, CAVITE)

3. On the space provided for the students name, it should also be in ALL CAPS with COMPLETE name (Ex. JENNIFER ALCARAZ CATOLICO)

4. Secure ALL data's needed IN THE SKILLS BOOKLET (FOR OR SCRUBS; the Final Dx, etc). Just to Make Sure.

5. Keep them TIDY TIDY TIDY!

We still got 2 weeks before summer duty ends, prompt those on duty to the following areas where we lack data for the scrubs.

Do it early, Do it NOW! :D

Glee Releases Madonna Cover Album; keeps fans longing for Episode 15!

Glee: the Musical, a comedy-musical show airing on FOX, releases 3rd album compilation on April 20, 2010 via itunes, and will have its world wide release on April 26, 2010.
